Video robots and musical light bulbs from Hong Kong

Last year Germany was the largest European importer of electronic goods from Hong Kong, with a value of 4.44 billion US dollars, and is the sixth largest market in the world for these products. A total of 41 companies are represented this year at IFA 2012, 24 of them under the auspices of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council . A variety of products are on display, including the prototype of a miniature robot from iReach Technology , whose built-in video camera with zoom and night viewing capability can transmit images to the screen of the cordless remote control unit and store them on an SD card. Introduced two years ago, the “Singing Bulb” is now in regular production. It is being exhibited by Sensor Industries and consists of an LED lamp with a conventional E-27 screw fitting and built-in loudspeaker, which is supplied with a signal by a mini-transmitter connected to a smartphone or music player.

The display by LG at this year’s IFA offers some fascinating technology. One of the main exhibits is the 55 inch OLED television, which is due to be launched onto the market this year at a cost of less than 10,000 euros. The technology is based on WOLED s, i.e. white OLEDs, generating brightness by using four identical, white, organic light diodes. The colour is produced by a filter known as the Colour Refiner.t passive 3D. It is also possible to screen two programmes simultan-eously.

Sennheiser is exhibiting its new range of sports headphones at IFA 2012. These five models have been developed in collaboration with the sports goods manufacturer adidas and have been tested by professional athletes. The new sports models can be worn in the ear canal, in-ear, with an ear hook, with a neckband or with a headband. All of them have been designed to be highly resistant to water, perspiration and cold. Three of the five new models are also provided with a control unit and microphone built into the cable. After completing one’s training session the headphones can be simply rinsed under a tap.

US analyst sees IFA as the world’s leading electronics trade show

Image

Berlin (dapd). According to US blogger and analyst Michael Gartenberg, when IFA opens on Friday the big-name manufacturers and retailers from the US and Asia will also be in Berlin. “IFA gives the US market a good indication of what will soon be on the market here”, said Gartenberg in an interview with dapd. IFA already sets the pace worldwide and lays down the topics for other shows such as CES in January in Las Vegas.

“Nowadays a press release from Berlin is picked up and discussed immediately in the US”, said Gartenberg, commenting on the growing attention that IFA commands. Gartenberg is an IT industry observer for market analysts Gartner. IFA’s importance will continue to grow: “We have not yet reached the point where trade shows such as IFA are becoming less important or irrelevant”, said Gartenberg.

CES, its competitor, is still more important in North America. However, globally speaking “IFA’s influence is big, in the US as well as in South America and Asia”. According to Gartenberg IFA’s success has less to do with its timing, shortly before Christmas trading begins, but more to do with Berlin: the show benefits from the city and its location at the heart of Europe. What is more the exhibition grounds are bigger than in Las Vegas, allowing IFA to display an even wider range of products.

Gartenberg sees no signs of the industry’s major players shunning electronics trade shows. The decision whether to exhibit or not depends on each individual company’s situation. Apple is a special case anyway: “They know that everybody will be talking about them even if they are not exhibiting at IFA “, said Gartenberg.

EVS moves into news production

Image

Image

After dominating live and fast turnaround sports and latterly gaining ground in live/near live studio production, Belgium’s popular server systems vendorEVS has moved into the news production sector.
At IBC, EVS will unveil its new Breaking News toolset, based on its ingest and playout servers for newsroom operations. The company claims the infrastructure is “the first and only ingest and playout infrastructure on the market that can be used across production areas from news to sports, entertainment and other programs.”
The system will offer collaborative production tools for journalists and content management solutions, which is said to “easily integrate with any existing production infrastructure.”
Speaking to TVB Europe, the company’s new CEO Joop Janssen, who joins EVS from running the Vitec Group on 3 September said: “EVS is a phenomenal company with a fantastic, young team which has continued to grow the business since 1994. It has been helped this year by many sports events, but it has also had a lot of success in studio-based production, where there are still opportunities to grow.
“If you look at where EVS’ strengths are, apart from the pure technology, it is in adding a lot of value to content in a very short timeframe. In a matter of seconds in fact EVS systems can add so much more to content giving clients a lot of opportunities in production and archive.”
Also at IBC, EVS will showcase the evolution of itsXT3/XS production servers, featuring triple encoding capabilities. This means that system can simultaneously support I-frame codecs for live replays, Long GoP Sony HD XDCam 422 50Mbps codec for reduced bitrate media sharing, and Proxy media for augmented connectivity and control of the production operations. The new features will be available in early 2013.
Also likely to turn heads at IBC is the C-Cast technology, which allows viewers to use their smartphones, tablets or laptops to access extra content and view clips during a live stream. Several European broadcasters are eyeing it for second screen apps during soccer coverage.
C-Cast’s latest features will include the ability to replay clips at variable speeds as well as the ability to import third-party statistics and analysis information integrated into a timeline.
